Relational psychosomatics

The person living with illness

Living with a physical illness can raise questions across different areas of life: your relationship with your body, the way you see yourself, your connections with others and your everyday experience.

Relational psychosomatics focuses on the person living through that experience. We seek to understand your distress, your relationships and the resources you may recognise and develop during therapy.

Understanding individual experience

This approach does not assume that you caused your illness through your thoughts or emotions. It does not seek to attribute illness to a single psychological cause.

The work takes place alongside medical care and does not replace it. It focuses on understanding your experience, including what illness makes more difficult to live with, feel or share.

With Gonçalo Neves

Gonçalo Neves works with people from adolescence onwards. People who seek this service include those living with cancer, skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, and gastrointestinal conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.

We consider whether this approach is suitable during an initial assessment, which may take up to three sessions. We discuss our understanding with you and, where continuing is appropriate, propose a direction for the work.

Practical information

Sessions last 45 minutes and take place at least weekly. The fee is €80 per session, including each session of the initial assessment.

Sessions are available in person and online, in Portuguese and English, with the same fees and duration.
